Thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday August 1st for our Community Resource Fair! The Detroit Literacy Coalition participated in the citywide Arise! Detroit 20th Anniversary celebration by hosting a community resources fair in our new space.
More than thirty community members participated in the day-long event. Volunteers helped remove debris, clean and rake the planting area, pick up garbage, and share in fellowship throughout the day. We even received some weighty donations to our Shoe Drive – every donation of new or gently used shoes of any type helps fund our literacy programs, so be sure to check out our home page for more info!
Our day’s project expanded the Ujima Community Garden Lab by creating additional workspace in the donated outdoor space behind New Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. This added area allowed us to strengthen the garden’s educational and planting activities while making the space safer and more useful for youth and community volunteers. With the expanded workspace, we planted year-round pollinator plants and native plants. These plantings help us teach youth about the important connection between pollinators and the fruits and vegetables produced during harvest season.
