Our Story

Founded in 1986, DLC began as a research-driven community alliance committed to reducing illiteracy in Metro Detroit. What started as an initiative focused on adult literacy and G.E.D. completion quickly grew in response to conversations with parents, teachers-educators, and community leaders who expressed concern about children struggling with reading, writing, mathematics, financial literacy, comprehension, and language development.

Listening to the community has always guided our work.

Our evolution was informed by thoughtful research and collaboration with faculty from Wayne State University, Wayne County Community College, public school educators, public library professionals, advocates, and neighborhood leaders. Together, we built a program rooted in both data and lived experience.

Our Approach

We use both quantitative and qualitative measures to ensure our programs are effective and responsive. Parents and facilitators consistently report:

  • Increased student engagement
  • Stronger classroom participation
  • Greater confidence in reading and writing
  • Meaningful connections to culturally relevant texts that reflect Detroit’s history and stories

We carefully track enrollment, attendance, instructional hours, program locations, and distribution of materials to ensure accountability and impact.

Our Impact

At the conclusion of each program cycle, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation to strengthen and refine our work. These evaluations have shown that:

  • Pre- and post-surveys
  • Community Focus groups
  • Small-group instruction improves learning outcomes
  • Expanded programming increases access
  • Digital storytelling deepens creativity and literacy skills
  • Curriculum enhancements help address neighborhood-specific literacy needs
